Why can’t we feed everyone?

Is it due to a global shortage of resources or is something else going on? At present, just 1% of the world’s wealthiest people control a disproportionate amount of the world’s wealth, leaving billions of people struggling to survive. Source: BBC News
"The inordinate disparity between rich and poor, a source of acute suffering, keeps the world in a state of instability, virtually on the brink of war.” The Promise of World Peace, 1985
There is also a critical shortage of housing. Why is that? Do we see shelter as a human right? Or do we see real estate as an investment tool for the rich? There appears to be no limits to the rising costs of rent or property. This leads to an increase of wealth for a few while leaving others unable to cover these constant increases. Could this be connected to the increase of unhoused people on our streets?
How do we do something to change this painful situation?
Thus far, we haven’t been able to find a system to improve these conditions. What needs to change? Could it be our attitudes? Do we see ourselves competing with everyone else as we strive to amass more wealth? Or could we learn to see others as members of our one Human Family?
